Towercos in the 5G Era
| The evolving role of Towercos in the 5G era No images? Click here Towercos: backing into the limelightRemember when towercos were passive infrastructure owners? Those days are long gone. For many years, tower companies have been seen as a driving force behind multi-operator infrastructure sharing. We believe towercos and neutral hosts are set to become still more significant in the 5G era. At the same time, while pure-play towercos still exist, many have been branching out for years.Independent towercos: the outsourcing opportunityBack in 2008, the financial downturn made selling off towers and leasing them back seem like the sensible approach for MNOs, reducing opex and helping to replenish significantly reduced coffers at the same time. Now ramping user demand and 5G rollout promise to reinforce and extend that trend, with densification already playing a part. IoT development will accelerate it even faster. Indoor coverage moves up the agenda – againThe challenge of providing high-quality in-building voice and data coverage is a perennial issue for service providers and their customers. We consider some new solutions to an old problem.

Focus on 5G and Smart Ports
| Techno-economic benefits of 5G No images? Click here 5G will deliver significantly higher data rates, lower latency and increased capacity. But diving deeper, what does the rollout of 5G actually look like for enterprises? What real-world economic benefits will it provide? The Port of Hamburg is Europe's third largest seaport. In 2018 it handled 8.7 million TEUs (that's containers to you and me!), and the port site covers more than 7,000 hectares. As part of a two-year project, Real Wireless assessed the commercial drivers in play throughout the port to design and deliver a resilient network capable of guaranteeing quality of service across a range of important use cases. Real Wireless Managing Consultant, Julie Bradford, puts this into context with an in-depth summary of our recent work at Hamburg Port as part of the EU Horizon 2020 5G-MonARch project. Private networks for smart ports? The growing complexity of port operations, logistics and security, coupled with the interdependencies between sea transportation, road & rail haulage, make wireless a compelling choice for enhanced port connectivity. In a companion article to our 5G-MoNArch wrap-up piece, Real Wireless CEO, Mark Keenan, outlines the practical challenges of deploying wireless in ports and considers in what circumstances private networks may have a role to play. Read the post here> What might sunsetting 2G mean for consumers? In last month’s newsletter we announced the publication by the UK Spectrum Forum of our report on the impact of sunsetting 2G networks in the UK. The response this announcement generated suggests that this is a subject close to many readers' hearts. So in this blog, Real Wireless Strategic Wireless Expert, John Okas, unpacks the potential impact this decision might have on consumers. Read the full blog post here>> 5G-MoNArch report downloadOur two-year participation in Europe’s 5G-MoNArch project was both challenging and an exciting opportunity to put 5G concepts – in particular, network slicing – into practise. The concepts and enablers were interrogated by way of prototype implementations in two testbeds (the Smart Sea Port in Hamburg and the Touristic City in Turin). Our summary report describes real-world implementations that explore network reliability, resilience and security, and resource elasticity. Download the summary report here>>
