Each year, we draw on the independent expertise of Real Wireless’ experts to summarise the issues the mobile industry needs to address in the next 12 months and why. We consider not just the technology but the commercial, regulatory and economic aspects too. The 2016 Real Wireless Manifesto looks at two of the high-profile challenges facing operators and the mobile industry – 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT). 5G 5G is the future standard for wireless for mobile and a whole host of other markets. While we expect to start seeing commercial activity around the Olympic Winter Games in Seoul (2018) and the Olympic Games in Tokyo (2020), the full potential won’t be realised until 2025. There is so much potential – and need – for 5G to support markets where, to date, wireless has not typically enabled such markets to reach their full potential, from healthcare to the connected car. IoT The Internet of Things is a term that seems to have been around forever, but one that has never truly reached its full potential. Despite this, 2015 was a milestone year for the IoT. But there are still major challenges that need to be overcome with competing standards and a lack of focus on a common solution for spectrum. |
