Focus on 5G and Smart Ports
Techno-economic benefits of 5G No images? Click here 5G will deliver significantly higher data rates, lower latency and increased capacity. But diving deeper, what does the rollout of 5G actually look like for enterprises? What real-world economic benefits will it provide? The Port of Hamburg is Europe's third largest seaport. In 2018 it handled 8.7 million TEUs (that's containers to you and me!), and the port site covers more than 7,000 hectares. As part of a two-year project, Real Wireless assessed the commercial drivers in play throughout the port to design and deliver a resilient network capable of guaranteeing quality of service across a range of important use cases. Real Wireless Managing Consultant, Julie Bradford, puts this into context with an in-depth summary of our recent work at Hamburg Port as part of the EU Horizon 2020 5G-MonARch project. Private networks for smart ports?The growing complexity of port operations, logistics and security, coupled with the interdependencies between sea transportation, road & rail haulage, make wireless a compelling choice for enhanced port connectivity. In a companion article to our 5G-MoNArch wrap-up piece, Real Wireless CEO, Mark Keenan, outlines the practical challenges of deploying wireless in ports and considers in what circumstances private networks may have a role to play. The concepts and enablers were interrogated by way of prototype implementations in two testbeds (the Smart Sea Port in Hamburg and the Touristic City in Turin).
