The Spectrum Crunch – Capacity & Coverage

space
space space
space

The insatiable demand for more spectrum continues. Real Wireless recently completed a major study for Ofcom, looking at the commercial and technical demand for spectrum over the next 20 years. The conclusion? We need 80x more spectrum. But how to find it?

space
space

As always with Real Wireless, the study considered both technical and commercial aspects, including innovations in standards such as LTE-A and beyond. The results? We predict that we will need 300MHz of licensed and 350MHz unlicensed more spectrum than we have today.

Wembley Wireless

Sports stadiums are notoriously some of the hardest challenges in wireless today, with population density of 1million/sq km and incredible traffic peaks as fans watch video and upload photos at the same time.

London's Wembley Stadium is one of the busiest in the world, famous for football (soccer), with a reputation for hosting great events. It's also one of Real Wireless' longest running clients. We started advising Wembley Stadium (and the Football Association) before it opened. This relationship continues, addressing all their cellular, radio and wireless demands.

UK Plans National Spectrum Strategy

Real Wireless has been asked to chair a group as part of the UK government's drive to develop a national spectrum strategy. The new group unites the UK telecoms regulator Ofcom with industry representatives and government leads - including defence and emergency services.

Director of Technology at Real Wireless, Simon Saunders, will chair the Technology & Demand Group. This UK body will feed into EU policy and ITU-R’s World Radio Conference 2015, which will consider additional mobile spectrum allocations specifically for 5G. It is likely that these discussions will influence future spectrum deployments around the world. For more detail, read our blog here.

Solving In-Building Coverage

space
space Real Wireless solves in-building coverage space
space

It is increasingly clear that in-building coverage is becoming a differentiator for operators and an essential service for building owners.

space
space

We are increasingly being asked to advise building owners and landlords, on how to deliver the best coverage and a consistently great experience for visitors. What we provide is a strategy that makes commercial sense and to manage the relationship between the enterprise and the operator.

space
space

Developers and architects are thinking about cellular coverage and wireless technology a lot earlier than they used to, propelled by new energy efficient building construction which also attenuates wireless signals. Offices and public buildings are more dependent on good mobile coverage than ever before. It's never too soon to get us involved. Our expertise lies in predicting what businesses need to meet consumer demand in the future. Email us for more information.

Mobile Brodband Data Growth - in Finland

In case anyone doubted the staggeringly high growth of mobile data over the last year or so, I came across some fascinating (and very detailed) statistics on mobile data in Finland (thanks to Dean Bubley for pointing these out).

Stunningly:

-          Total data traffic in ‘07 was 13 x larger in volume than the previous year

-          92% of data traffic was from computers rather than phones

-          This share of traffic was from just 2.1% of devices

Femto Forum Femtocell-Network Integration Initiative

We have just announced a new initiative to encourage convergence of the various methods for integrating femtocells with operator core networks. Operators have highlighted that this is one of the key issues for them in suppoprting femtocells economically as volumes rise beyond those present at initial launch. It also helps them support products from multiple femtocell vendors, giving customers choice regarding functions and form factors.
At the same time we announced several exciting new members (Cisco, Ericsson, Vodafone, BT etc.)

Plenty of press stories have picked up on this:

The Femto Forum goes live!

West Sussex

I have recently been appointed founding chairman of The Femto Forum, an independent, inclusive, international body promoting the deployment of femtocells. Femtocells are low power home access points using cellular standards and licensed spectrum to provide dedicated home coverage and capacity to standard mobile devices. Femto Forum has major operators and vendors both big and small as its members, and launches publically tomorrow.

Femto Forum will drive standards to ensure femtocells can be manufactured cheaply enough to be suitable for home use, will provide market education to ensure the benefits of femtocells are well understood, and will develop the 'ecosystem' of operators and vendors to help create a thriving industry.

I'm produ to be involved with such an exciting area of technology, which is one of the development which promises to finally fulfill the latent promise of in-building wireless which has been apparent over the last decade or so.

Ofcom Spectrum Advisory Board

I'm delighted to announce that I have just been appointed to the Ofcom Spectrum Advisory Board (www.osab.org.uk). OSAB provides independent advice to Ofcom (www.ofcom.org.uk) on strategic spectrum management issues. It provides input directly to Ofcom's main board. This gives me a great opportunity to gain deeper knowledge of (and potentially to influence) Ofcom's future direction on spectrum matters. I also get to interact with some very interesting people, namely:

  • Sir David Brown - Chairman of Motorola Limited
  • Dr David Cleevely - Founder of Analysys and previous Chairman of Analysys Limited
  • Professor Leela Damodaran - leads the Information, Technology and Society Research Group at Loughborough University
  • Professor Barry Evans -  Director of the Centre for Communication Systems Research (CCSR) and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research & Enterprise) at University of Surrey
  • Debbie Gillatt - Director, Communications Networks at the Department of Trade and Industry
  • Phillipa Marks - Director of Indepen Consulting
  • Andrew Sleigh - Managing Director, Knowledge and Information Systems Division for QinetiQ
  • Professor Will Stewart - Previously the Chief Scientist at Marconi
  • Stephen Temple CBE - Previously Director of Strategic Projects, Vodafone and Managing Director of the Networks Division of ntl
  • Dr Walter Tuttlebee - Chief Executive of the Virtual Centre of Excellence in Mobile & Personal Communications - Mobile VCE
  • Robert Pepper - Senior Managing Director, Global Advanced Technology Policy, Cisco Systems Inc and previously Bureau Chief at the FCC
  • Professor Tommaso Valletti - Professor of Economics at Imperial College London and at the University of Rome
