Slovenia & Scotland: Lessons for Rural Coverage

space

Real Wireless has recently completed two projects on how governments & regulators can improve cellular coverage in rural areas. Given that 4G may be the only viable broadband for rural areas this is an important part of the EU’s Digital Agenda to deliver 30Mbps to citizens by 2020.

We worked with SQW on a project for the Scottish Government on 4G coverage, how this affects the economy and the policy implications. 4G will improve both data and voice connectivity across Scotland to a striking degree, and it will happen faster than many expect – but there are still many policy options that would significantly improve both speed and coverage. In Slovenia we helped the regulator set the license conditions and coverage obligations. From our experience working with Ofcom on the UK auctions, we were able to advise on how the potential costs would vary and how best to balance the different factors to get the best results for the country. The Small Cell Forum has just announced Release Four – Urban. A major part of this is the business case from Real Wireless; a comprehensive technical and financial examination of the balance of benefits and costs, including backhaul, macrocell and fibre deployments. For example, in a typical dense, urban area we find that the deployment of small cells to enhance capacity yields a Return on Investment of 136%.

We found a number of important and surprising conclusions including how small cells can help depth of coverage for operators without <1GHz spectrum. Download here.

More than half of operators polled found the Business Case the most useful part of Release Four. More details.

Speaking at the Stadium Business Summit, Real Wireless’ Mark Keenan used the gig, and the recent Superbowl (where over 3TB of cellular data was used, 800% up on 2013) as examples of how wireless traffic in venues is growing explosively.
